Sindh decides to amend Local Government Act ahead of polls

KARACHI: Sindh Local Government Minister Nasir Hussain Shah on Monday chaired an important meeting to discuss new LG system and amendments in the Local Government Act 2013, ARY News reported.

The meeting principally decided to make amendments in Sindh Local Government Act 2013 before local bodies elections likely to be held in February next year.

Sources privy to the development said the meeting has decided to bring a new local government system at the town level.

Speaking in the meeting, the Sindh minister said the government would new local government system after consulting with all stakeholders.

The meeting was attended by the secretary local government, legal experts and others.

Back in September, the counsel of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had apprised the Sindh High Court (SHC) that the actions of the Sindh government were causing delays in organising the local government polls.

The ECP counsel told the court that the Sindh government’s actions were causing delays in LG polls. The lawyer added that the provincial government wanted to complete legislation for amendments in LG laws.

According to the law, the local government elections in all the provinces have to take place within four months after the expiry of the term of local bodies.

Karachi Administrator and Sindh Government Spokesman Murtaza Wahab earlier said the Sindh government is ready to hold the local government elections in February or March.
